The Policy applies to all Post 16 students of the Academy in a similar way to staff.
It is important that the image projected by all staff on the Banbury Aspirations Campus reflects the high expectations in both academies.
The purpose of this dress code is to:
Present a professional and positive image of our two academies;
Avoid giving offence to people of different cultures or beliefs;
Present positive role models;
Avoid unintentional injury;
Contribute to the highest standards of health and safety suitable for the environment in
which we choose to learn and work.
Dress Code Requirements
A useful comparator is the standard and type of dress that can be commonly seen worn by staff working in a professional office.
A suit or smart trousers and a collared shirt with tie. The top button should always be secured. In some situations, e.g. DT workshops or science labs, a tie may present a safety risk and so may be removed at the discretion of teachers or staff. Jackets may be removed with permission of teachers and staff
A smart skirt / trousers / dress for females and blouse or other smart top as appropriate. A jacket / smart cardigan may also be worn. Again, these can be removed at the discretion of teachers or staff.
Tailored dresses and jackets can be worn but must not be made of stretchy lycra material. Skirts and dresses must be of a respectable length, trousers must be of full length. Tops should be modest with necklines appropriate for an office environment.
Footwear that is appropriately smart and safe for walking around the campus is vital.
Smart shoes only (trainers/plimsolls eg. brands such as Nike, Adidas, Puma, Lonsdale, Vans etc are not permitted)
- Hair should be neat and tidy. No extreme hairstyles will be permitted. Where hair is of shoulder length or longer it should be tied back in laboratories, workshops and during PE for safety reasons.
- Visible tattoos are discouraged and must be discreet.
- Jewellery and make-up should be discreet; no body piercings, other than an earrings in each ear, to be visible. Nail varnish must be discreet
- Hijabs covering head and shoulders may be worn as part of religious belief and should be suitable for the work environment. The face should not be covered as this may interfere with the clear communication required by adults in a school environment
- Males may wear beards / facial hair. All facial hair should be kept tidy.
Post 16 students involved in lessons of practical or sporting subjects are expected to wear suitable clothing or protective wear. However, they are expected to change into business attire where and when appropriate, under no circumstances is a student permitted to wear sports clothing into school.
The following may be helpful in clarifying what is and what is not appropriate on the Banbury Aspirations campus:
- No denim or jean-styled trousers, skirts or shirts of any colour;
- No combat or cargo trousers;
- No leggings or, shorts (except for PE) or three-quarter length cropped trousers;
- No Hooded jumpers (hoodies) are permitted on the school site
- Women’s tops may be sleeveless, but should not be strappy (i.e. have spaghetti type straps) or be strapless
- No clothing that is revealing, excessively tight or made of sheer fabric exposing underwear.
- No clothes that are excessively worn or faded;
- No clothes with rips or tears;
- No casual T-shirts.
- No leather;
- No leisure or sportswear, except for PE;
- No trainers, except for PE;
- No flip flops or, stiletto heels or open-backed shoes / sandals (for health and safety reasons);
- UGG or similar sheepskin boots
- No hats or caps (inside the building);
Equality and diversity
Banbury Aspirations Campus values and recognises the diversity of cultures, religions and disabilities of its employees and students and will take a sensitive approach when this affects dress requirements. Hijabs worn for religious purposes must not cover the face. Turbans, kippots and headscarves are supported on religious grounds but must not compromise health and safety. Dreadlocks are permitted.
We are aware that it has been established that employers do not have to impose exactly the same dress code on men and women. If the dress code applies “conventional standards of dress and appearance” then it will be seen as applying an even handed approach between males and females
This Policy is not exhaustive in defining acceptable and unacceptable standards of dress and appearance and staff and Post 16 students must use common sense in adhering to the principles underpinning the Policy.
